Do I Need a Coach or Mentor for My Business?

And How Do I Choose What Will Actually Meet My Needs?

This is a question I hear often, usually quietly, and sometimes with a hint of confusion or overwhelm attached.

“Should I be able to do this on my own by now?”

“Do I really need a coach or mentor, or am I just failing at business?”

Let me reassure you straight away:  Needing support does not mean you’re doing something wrong. In fact, it often means you’re ready to do something better.

The Myth of “I Should Know This By Now”

Many therapists, salon owners, and wellness business owners are incredibly skilled at what they do.

  • You know how to care for clients.
  • You know how to hold space.
  • You know how to deliver results.

But business?

Business often gets learned in the gaps, late at night, through trial and error, podcasts on double speed, and a fair amount of winging it.

And here’s the part no one says out loud:

You can know what to do in business and still feel completely stuck doing it.

This is where the conversation needs to shift.

Is It Business Support You Need… or Mindset Support First?

On the surface, it often looks like a business problem:

  • You’re procrastinating on marketing
  • You undercharge or avoid selling
  • You feel overwhelmed by choice
  • You start things but don’t finish them

So you assume you need a strategy. A system. A better plan.

But underneath that, I often see something else entirely:

Fear of being visible. A deep discomfort with money. Old beliefs about “not being good enough”

Anxiety that keeps your nervous system in survival mode

You can’t strategy your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.

If your mind is constantly busy, anxious, or self-critical, even the best business plan will feel heavy, confusing, or impossible to implement.

That’s why for many people, mindset isn’t a “nice extra”  it’s the foundation.

Coach or Mentor — What’s the Difference?

This is another area that causes confusion.

A mentor usually draws on lived experience. They’ve been where you are, run businesses, made mistakes, and can say:  “Here’s what worked, here’s what didn’t, and here’s what I’d do differently.”

A coach helps you understand how you think, why you react the way you do, and what’s really driving your decisions (or indecision).

Neither is better.

But the right one for you depends on where you’re stuck.

If you’re asking:

“What should I do next?” — mentoring may help

“Why do I keep getting in my own way?” — coaching is often the key

And sometimes… you need both.

Why Mindset Comes Before Momentum

I’ve worked with enough business owners over the years to notice a pattern.

When your inner world is chaotic: Everything feels urgent. You’re constantly second-guessing. Decisions feel heavy. You’re busy, but not effective

When your mindset is supported:

  • You think more clearly
  • You feel calmer in decision-making
  • You stop reacting and start responding
  • Progress feels lighter and more aligned

This is why I don’t separate “business” from “mindset”.

Your business is a reflection of how safe, confident, and supported you feel internally.

How to Choose the Right Support for You

Before investing in any coach or mentor, ask yourself these questions honestly:

  • Do I feel stuck because I lack information or because I feel overwhelmed?
  • Am I avoiding action because I don’t know what to do  or because I’m anxious about being seen or judged?
  • Do I want someone to give me answers  or someone to help me change how I think and feel while I build?

And just as importantly:

  • Do I feel safe, understood, and not “fixed” around this person?

Because real change doesn’t come from pressure.

It comes from clarity, trust, and feeling supported enough to grow.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

If you’ve been telling yourself:

“I’ll sort my mindset once the business is sorted,”

I’ll gently challenge that.

Often, the business begins to shift because the mindset is supported first.

Whether you’re building, rebuilding, or simply feeling tired of carrying it all in your head, the right support can change everything, not just in your business, but in how you experience your life alongside it.

If this resonates, and you’re curious about what kind of support would actually meet you where you are, you’re very welcome to explore working with me.

No pressure.

Just a conversation.

Sometimes the most powerful business decision you make is choosing not to do it all on your own.
